Get Outdoors!

August 14, 2025

Camp season is still running strong in August! And if you didn’t sign up your kiddo for camp this summer, or if that week has come and gone, then you’re probably looking for other fun activities to do. Including fun in the outdoors is always a safe bet and one that will guarantee benefits. Ther’s plenty of outdoor facilities in our Greater Hampton Roads area, from several state parks to city parks.

Research shows that spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature is associated with improved mood, focus, and confidence—whether you spend that time becoming a rockstar at rock climbing, making a splash in the puddles around your neighborhood, or watching wandering wildlife at a park.

Whether they’re swimming in a lake for the first time at summer camp, discovering the wildlife in their own backyards, or being a citizen scientist and observing bees in their local park, every outdoor adventure grows a a kid’s “I’ve got this” attitude.  Those experiences unlock confidence that will open up so many doors in life.

You can take an extra step and check out organizations that offer a lot of outdoor program to build your child’s self-confidence, such as Girl Scouts. With Girl Scout campgrounds across the country and council-powered outdoor programs, there are lots of options for Girl Scouts to choose their own adventure year-round.

The annual Girl Scouts Love State Parks will be happening on September 13 and 14 in the area at three different state parks. These events are open to non-Girl Scouts, to families interested in learning more about Girl Scouting.

This event encourages Girl Scouts and guess to explore and connect with the outdoors, specifically within Virginia State Parks. Activities include self-guided tours, family hikes, and more. Details can be found on Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast (GSCCC) website.

When you’re a Girl Scout, every adventure is an opportunity for unexpected experiences and newfound friendships. There’s nothing you can’t do with your besties by your side! Embrace the unexpected and watch as ordinary moments become lifelong memories.

Girl Scouts Love State Parks is a national event that highlights a deep partnership between Girl Scouts and state parks in all 50 states!
